Cards for the Day: R’d 5 of Pentacles/Knight of Wands: A Strong, Pure Spirit Rides to the Rescue…on a Dragon?

Five of Pentacles reversed--Samurai TarotKnight of Wands--SamuraiTarotI think I’ve mentioned before that in the Samurai Tarot, the court cards each are represented by historical or legendary figures from Japan. Today we have Shoki the demon hunter showing up in the cards, along with the reversed Five of Pentacles, which the Samurai Tarot describes as “melancholy.” What I see in this reversed Five is that things haven’t been going that well lately, especially on a material or financial level, or perhaps more broadly on a first chakra-basic security level, but, we may be coming to the end of that cycle or micro-cycle. Not really feeling it yet, though. At the moment we may still be rather discouraged and feeling anxious about these issues. You could sum up the Five of Pentacles message in one word, “insecurity.”

But the reason this cycle is coming to a close is that someone is getting fed up with living this way. You could sum up this Knight of Wands in one word, “protection”! There is nothing quite like a knight for coming to the rescue. Shoki the demon hunter might seem an unlikely knight, but not if our insecurity is rooted in issues that could be described as “demons.” Shoki isn’t bothered by demons such as addiction, mental illness, phobias, neuroses, and the like. In fact, he laughs at them. Yes, even when they are big and scary looking. Maybe especially then.

You could look at the figure of Shoki in two ways (or maybe more!). One way is to view Shoki as the part of our own spirit or psyche that rises up in resistance when times get rough — the part of us that says, “bring it on, I can deal with it,” even if the odds are against us. We all do have a little Shoki in us, somewhere, that can surface at times of need. Or, you could view Shoki as an angel or bodhisattva, or possibly even an ancestor, who specializes in psychic protection, someone who will literally come to our rescue if asked. Do you believe in such things? Well, that’s for you to decide. (Though I must say I love the idea of an angel who doesn’t have wings or a halo and comes riding up on a dragon!!)

But the message is the same either way, and it’s this: to overcome those rough times, you must call upon your strong spirit. This is the spirit that gets you through when maybe all you have to your name is your spunk, your courage, your backbone, and your sense of humor. That really is all you need. That strong spirit can be mightily resourceful when it wants to be…whether it comes from within or whether it truly is an angel or bodhisattva.
